Watercolour: Wet on wet technique
I am taking a watercolour 101 class. I really want to understand traditional analog painting before focusing on digital painting and this barn owl was drawing with a wet on wet technique in mind.
I tried to make the ears as feathery looking as possible in this painting. It’s really humid here and even though I had pre wet my paper, I had to work quickly as the water dried quickly. I am using hahnemuhle toned watercolour book here. It’s a really lovely paper as I am trying to figure out different types of paper I like with watercolour or even mixed media art. I don’t know if I would get the toned paper again but for this as a nature and a experimental sketchbook, it works really great. I am loving this paper, it doesn’t wrinkle easily and it adheres to paint and water well. I am using schmincke water colours here and copic white for the highlights. I have to fix the wonky eye on this owl but I feel like I am understanding watercolour painting better as I don’t panic and just move the coloured water in directions and some of the textures are really yummy! I used a different sized round brushes, smaller for the details.
What are your favourite supplies? Courses to take? I have signed up for a few courses in Domestika and local art teachers. Really I found a lot of these places finding online art classes for my kids during the pandemic. I really like the two courses I am taking because it’s live and you get that constructive feedback to improve your art. I really like that one has a recording after for a few weeks since I am on a completely different time zone if I don’t catch the whole thing. I have taken 3 Domestika courses and I’ll share more later which ones and review in more detail here but I did it mostly for surface pattern design, learning more about putting a portfolio together and getting better with drawing with Adobe Photoshop.
I am going to focus on really updating the website and adding more content. I am hoping to start adding some vlog content and add some items to the shop. I have the plugin ready to go, just learning how to set up the goodies up in the shop.
